Costa Rican unions break talks with the government

San Jose, Mar 24 (Prensa Latina) The Costa Rican trade unions broke off the dialogue held with the government on the question of salaries, and announced tough measures to pressure.

According to local daily El Pais, and representatives of the teachers union decided to suspend their participation in the meetings of the negotiating committee of public sector wages, because the government offered no concrete proposal.

"They gave us the finger gruel," said the leader of the National Association of Public Employees (ANEP), Edgar Morales.

Workers reject the recent salary adjustments of 2.33 percent in the public sector and 2.63 for private workers.

also asked to define a fair and equitable salary policy, and disapprove the salary adjustments by decree.

explained that current wages are insufficient to meet the cost of living and the government was not taking the proposal to change the formula for calculating the adjustment.

However, the current administration has issued three guidelines related to freezing of positions, restrictions on public spending, wage freezes and elimination of dedication, which angered union leaders.
Workers announced
protests which also rejected the so-called fiscal paquetazo and labor policy of the Executive.

On March 10 some 25,000 workers took to the streets to protest the Solidarity Tax Act, which includes tax.

The fiscal paquetazo, as it is called, plans to increase the value added tax from 13 to 15 percent and raise electricity tariffs and taxes on sales of certain public services.

For Rodrigo Aguilar, president of the Confederación de Trabajadores Rerum Novarum, the rules loaded into the backs of workers paying taxes. Figures released

recently by the press today indicate that more than a million Costa Ricans live in poverty, while growing insecurity, violence and drug trafficking.
