Thousands of farmers from various locations in the interior of Paraguay arrived Wednesday to the city of Asunción to protest Thursday and Friday to demand agrarian reform and technical assistance and credit.
peasants gathered on Wednesday at the headquarters of the former Metropolitan Seminary, outside the perimeter downtown Asuncion, where it mobilized on Thursday to host the Congress.
The impetus for land reform was one of the key issues in the campaign for the presidency of Fernando Lugo in 2008.
According to the leader of the National Federation Campesina (FNC), Adrián Vázquez, "land reform is an urgent need for the country, is the only way we see and demand that the election speech of President Fernando Lugo is real ".
The FNC brings together some 270,000 families of small farmers, most of which involved the cultivation of cotton.
